One dead, 11 injured, when car drives through Los Angeles boardwalk

By emrys

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A motorist drove a car through the popular Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 11 others in a hit-and-run incident that spanned several city blocks, authorities said. "There was a hit-and-run and the vehicle is in custody.

The driver fled on foot. There is a possible suspect who has been detained," said Daniel Chun, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Witnesses described the driver as a white man in his mid-20s with sandy blond hair, and the detained suspect fit that description, said Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Andy Neiman.

"We have a vehicle in custody ... with collision damage consistent with what happened out here," Neiman said, adding it was a four-door, dark- colored Dodge Avenger.

Witnesses said the car traveled as fast as 20 miles per hour down the oceanside pedestrian walkway at around 6 p.m., said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver ditched his car in nearby Santa Monica, Neiman said. The suspect who police have detained and are questioning turned himself in after the incident.

Police do not know the driver's motive or if he had been drinking, Neiman said, adding that the suspect will face homicide charges in addition to felony hit-and-run charges.

Ten of the 12 people injured were taken to hospitals - two in critical condition, one of whom died, and two in serious condition. Of the eight who sustained minor injuries, two declined hospital treatment, Humphrey said.

Injuries included broken bones, head trauma and soft tissue damage, Humphrey said, adding that more than 100 emergency responders were on scene and crews had set up a triage area to treat those injured. Local CBS affiliate KCAL9 quoted witnesses as saying the driver appeared to be trying to strike pedestrians.

A man who said he worked at a nearby cafe told NBC4 that he heard what sounded like a car hurtling down an alleyway, followed by screams. "Firefighters never saw the vehicle and we never saw the driver," Humphrey said.

The Venice Beach boardwalk is a major tourist attraction known for its eclectic patchwork of shops, restaurants and sporting areas.

In 2003, an elderly man drove his car through a crowded farmers' market in nearby Santa Monica, killing 10 people and injuring 69. (Writing and additional reporting by Eric M. Johnson in Seattle; Editing by Peter Cooney and Pravin Char)

Brazilian Woman Who Auctioned Virginity Says She's Still Virgin (PHOTOS & VIDEO 18+)

Brazilian Woman Who Auctioned Virginity Says She's Still Virgin (PHOTOS & VIDEO 18+)

The woman who became an Internet sensation by auctioning off her virginity for $780,000 now says that she was tricked and exploited - and that she's still a virgin.
Catarina Migliorini, a 21-year-old woman from Brazil, told by email that the highly publicized Internet auction last October, organized by filmmaker Justin Sisely, has turned into a giant fiasco.
"I felt I was a victim ... I was misled by Mr. Justin Sisely," Migliorini said. "I believe he is trying to defraud me and others."

Sisely was supposedly filming a documentary entitled "Virgins Wanted," which would explore the lives of Migliorini and Alex Stepanov, a male counterpart who was also auctioning his virginity.
A 53-year-old Japanese millionaire who identified himself online as "Natsu" placed the winning bid for Migliorini. But when she went to meet him in a restaurant in Sydney, Australia, he didn't match the description Sisely gave her. Nor did they ever have sex.

What's more, she claims Sisely didn't cover her traveling expenses or give her the money promised.
Sisely denies Migliorini's claims. "We have the footage to prove otherwise," he told by email. He also says she breached her contract as an actress.
When Sisely first announced the documentary in May 2010, he said it would culminate with both of the virgins having sex. However, the promise of sex was not set in stone, Migliorini claims.

“Justin made me believe this was a serious documentary about young virgins and said that there might or might not be an auction at the end of the documentary,” she said.
But after Sisely and Migliorini met in Bali, the auction had already been publicly announced, forcing Migliorini into a corner.
“I agreed to go along with it, because Justin said it would be the best way to draw attention from the media about the project,” she said.
In exchange for her participation, Migliorini said she was supposed to receive 20 percent of documentary sales and all of the money from the winning auction bid of $780,000. Neither has materialized, she claims.
Migliorini now believes that "Natsu" doesn't exist. She never had sex with him, and proudly describes herself as a virgin.

Leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, its affiliate, National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, and other activists, on Wednesday, shut down the operations  of Diamond Bank Plc’s Head Office, and two other key branches in Lagos, over sack of 200 union members and officials.

The Adeola Hopewell Head Office and two other branches considered vital to the bank’s effective transactions were shut, preventing customers and others from gaining access into the bank.

The aggrieved labour leaders and activists, displayed several placards with inscriptions such as ‘Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Diamond Bank has closed door against workers, do not keep silent,’ ‘core staff or not we are all workers of Diamond Bank Plc,’ ‘Equals should be treated equally,’ among others.

The picketing, according to leaders of NLC and NUBIFIE, was prompted by the alleged refusal of the management of the bank to, among others, reinstate the sacked workers, even when the National Industrial Court, NIC and Ministry of Labour and Productivity, advised it to do so.

They were said to have arrived the bank’s head office few minutes past 8a.m., barricaded it and ensured that its operations were crippled.

But in an unsigned statement by the bank, it said, “Third party support personnel posted to Diamond Bank have recently had challenges with their Employer –C & M Exchange. As these issues are yet to be resolved, the third party personnel would like Diamond Bank to intercede to resolve the differences.

“Diamond Bank remains concerned about the working conditions and welfare of its entire staff, both contractual and full time.

“As such, we are currently discussing intensely with C & M Exchange to ensure they resolve the issues with their employees in a swift and amicable manner.

(Reuters) - Passengers aboard the Asiana Airlines plane that crashed in San Francisco were initially told not to evacuate the aircraft after it skidded to a halt on the runway, a federal safety official said on Wednesday.
But a flight attendant saw fire outside the plane, and the call to exit was made, 90 seconds after the crash, said National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Deborah Hersman at a San Francisco press conference. The first emergency response vehicles arrived 30 seconds later.
The Saturday crash of the Boeing 777 killed two and injured more than 180.
In her fourth media briefing on the accident, Hersman said three flight attendants and their seats were ejected from the plane after it hit a seawall in front of the runway and lost its tail section.
Two other flight attendants were temporarily pinned inside the cabin when two different evacuation chutes deployed inside the aircraft.
Hersman noted that an immediate evacuation is not always the standard procedure or the correct decision for pilots to make.
"The pilots indicated that they were working with aircraft control," she said. "We don't know what the pilots were thinking but I can tell you that in previous accidents there have been crews that don't evacuate. They wait for other crews to come," she said.
Safety rules require that it be possible to evacuate all passengers from a plane in 90 seconds.
According to interviews with six of the 12 flight attendants on board, there was at first no fire inside the plane, Hersman said. But as the evacuation proceeded fire began to break out in the interior and was fought by flight attendants with fire extinguishers even as emergency personnel began to arrive.
Six flight attendants remain hospitalized and have not yet been interviewed.
Asiana Airlines briefly introduced the other six flight attendants at a separate press event. The attendants have been praised as heroes who pushed for the evacuation and helped passengers out of the smoking plane.
"The primary goal for us was to have passengers evacuate swiftly. That is the only thing I was thinking," flight attendant Lee Yoon-hye, 40, said.
"There was no moment of hesitation about what to do. Because we have done so many training on emergency every year, it was instantly clear about what to do. It was really instant reaction without thinking," said the 18-year Asiana veteran.
Lee, who worked on South Korea's Air Force One in 2000-2003 for then-President Kim Dae-jung, later discovered she had broken her tailbone.
The attendants were hailed as heroes in South Korea, with one newspaper saying they had rescued the country's national image.
Hersman said one of the pilots reported being blinded by a flash of light when the plane was 500 feet off the ground as it approached the airport. She offered no theory as to what might have caused such a flash.
Hersman said further analysis of the plane's auto-pilot system and automated throttle control were necessary to understand what the pilots did in the final moments of the flight.
The pilot in charge of the plane told the NTSB that he was relying on the throttle control to keep the plane at its proper speed and failed to recognize that the aircraft had slowed dramatically as it approached the runway, Hersman had said on Tuesday. The slow speed was a key cause of the crash.
Hersman again stressed that even if an electronic control system had malfunctioned, the pilots should still have been able to land the plane safely.
"There are two pilots in the cockpit for a reason," she said, and they are responsible for monitoring all aspects of flight, including critical variables like air speed.
The role of increasingly sophisticated electronic control systems on passenger jets - and whether they may be breeding complacency among pilots - was already the subject of fierce debate in the aviation community, and the issue is likely to gain new urgency in the wake of the Asiana crash.

Don't Call Me For A Show If You Do Not Have N5 Million - Wizkid

Nigerian singer Ayo “Wizkid” Balogun was recently in a controversy concerning the fact that some UNILAG students accused him of fraud.
He clarifies the incident below:
What really happened between you and the UNILAG students. You were accused of duping them?

By now, I think all is clear that there are some people parading themselves as either Wizkid or his managers. The unfortunate incident regarding the UNILAG students is a case of mistaken identity where people fell victim to some unscrupulous elements who impersonated me or my representatives. The same people, as we have come to know, went as far as creating fake accounts in my name to dupe people.
How did you find out about the issue?
Basically, the police just called us to inform us of the development. We can’t really give full details because we were invited to come to the police station and we went as law abiding citizens. When we got there, we gave our own statement as well as the students. But we really can’t say anything now until the police have done their proper investigations. But with the details on ground, what we want you to know is that the so-called Wizkid the students have been contacting is fake and an impostor. It’s really not from me or from anybody around me.
What was your first reaction when you heard the news?
I felt so bad. I just went to my Twitter account and tweeted the normal people to contact if you want to book a show with Wizkid. Let’s be realistic. Everybody saw my hustle and watched me grow. When I dropped “Holla Your Boy”, I was much younger and wasn’t charging up to N5 million for shows. This is just playing out and it is simple.
So, how much do you charge now?
N5 million is okay for my show. But let’s just put things right. It is so bad to my company’s name and my name as well. That is why I decided to open up on the issue.

Temper control

Temper control

by Stephen on October 22, 2008 · 97 comments
Once upon a time there was a little boy who was talented, creative, handsome, and extremely bright. A natural leader. The kind of person everyone would normally have wanted on their team or project. But he was also self-centered and had a very bad temper. When he got angry, he usually said, and often did, some very hurtful things. In fact, he seemed to have little regard for those around him. Even friends. So, naturally, he had few. “But,” he told himself, “that just shows how stupid most people are!”
As he grew, his parents became concerned about this personality flaw, and pondered long and hard about what they should do. Finally, the father had an idea. And he struck a bargain with his son. He gave him a bag of nails, and a BIG hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper,” he told the boy, “I want you to really let it out. Just take a nail and drive it into the oak boards of that old fence out back. Hit that nail as hard as you can!”
Of course, those weathered oak boards in that old fence were almost as tough as iron, and the hammer was mighty heavy, so it wasn’t nearly as easy as it first sounded. Nevertheless, by the end of the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence (That was one angry young man!). Gradually, over a period of weeks, the number dwindled down. Holding his temper proved to be easier than driving nails into the fence! Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He felt mighty proud as he told his parents about that accomplishment.
“As a sign of your success,” his father responded, “you get to PULL OUT one nail. In fact, you can do that each day that you don’t lose your temper even once.”
Well, many weeks passed. Finally one day the young boy was able to report proudly that all the nails were gone.
At that point, the father asked his son to walk out back with him and take one more good look at the fence. “You have done well, my son,” he said. “But I want you to notice the holes that are left. No matter what happens from now on, this fence will never be the same. Saying or doing hurtful things in anger produces the same kind of result. There will always be a scar. It won’t matter how many times you say you’re sorry, or how many years pass, the scar will still be there. And a verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. People are much more valuable than an old fence. They make us smile. They help us succeed. Some will even become friends who share our joys, and support us through bad times. And, if they trust us, they will also open their hearts to us. That means we need to treat everyone with love and respect. We need to prevent as many of those scars as we can.”
A most valuable lesson, don’t you think? And a reminder most of us need from time to time. Everyone gets angry occasionally. The real test is what we DO with it.
If we are wise, we will spend our time building bridges rather than barriers in our relationships.
