One dead, 11 injured, when car drives through Los Angeles boardwalk

By emrys

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A motorist drove a car through the popular Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 11 others in a hit-and-run incident that spanned several city blocks, authorities said. "There was a hit-and-run and the vehicle is in custody.

The driver fled on foot. There is a possible suspect who has been detained," said Daniel Chun, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Witnesses described the driver as a white man in his mid-20s with sandy blond hair, and the detained suspect fit that description, said Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Andy Neiman.

"We have a vehicle in custody ... with collision damage consistent with what happened out here," Neiman said, adding it was a four-door, dark- colored Dodge Avenger.

Witnesses said the car traveled as fast as 20 miles per hour down the oceanside pedestrian walkway at around 6 p.m., said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver ditched his car in nearby Santa Monica, Neiman said. The suspect who police have detained and are questioning turned himself in after the incident.

Police do not know the driver's motive or if he had been drinking, Neiman said, adding that the suspect will face homicide charges in addition to felony hit-and-run charges.

Ten of the 12 people injured were taken to hospitals - two in critical condition, one of whom died, and two in serious condition. Of the eight who sustained minor injuries, two declined hospital treatment, Humphrey said.

Injuries included broken bones, head trauma and soft tissue damage, Humphrey said, adding that more than 100 emergency responders were on scene and crews had set up a triage area to treat those injured. Local CBS affiliate KCAL9 quoted witnesses as saying the driver appeared to be trying to strike pedestrians.

A man who said he worked at a nearby cafe told NBC4 that he heard what sounded like a car hurtling down an alleyway, followed by screams. "Firefighters never saw the vehicle and we never saw the driver," Humphrey said.

The Venice Beach boardwalk is a major tourist attraction known for its eclectic patchwork of shops, restaurants and sporting areas.

In 2003, an elderly man drove his car through a crowded farmers' market in nearby Santa Monica, killing 10 people and injuring 69. (Writing and additional reporting by Eric M. Johnson in Seattle; Editing by Peter Cooney and Pravin Char)

Brazilian Woman Who Auctioned Virginity Says She's Still Virgin (PHOTOS & VIDEO 18+)

Brazilian Woman Who Auctioned Virginity Says She's Still Virgin (PHOTOS & VIDEO 18+)

The woman who became an Internet sensation by auctioning off her virginity for $780,000 now says that she was tricked and exploited - and that she's still a virgin.
Catarina Migliorini, a 21-year-old woman from Brazil, told by email that the highly publicized Internet auction last October, organized by filmmaker Justin Sisely, has turned into a giant fiasco.
"I felt I was a victim ... I was misled by Mr. Justin Sisely," Migliorini said. "I believe he is trying to defraud me and others."

Sisely was supposedly filming a documentary entitled "Virgins Wanted," which would explore the lives of Migliorini and Alex Stepanov, a male counterpart who was also auctioning his virginity.
A 53-year-old Japanese millionaire who identified himself online as "Natsu" placed the winning bid for Migliorini. But when she went to meet him in a restaurant in Sydney, Australia, he didn't match the description Sisely gave her. Nor did they ever have sex.

What's more, she claims Sisely didn't cover her traveling expenses or give her the money promised.
Sisely denies Migliorini's claims. "We have the footage to prove otherwise," he told by email. He also says she breached her contract as an actress.
When Sisely first announced the documentary in May 2010, he said it would culminate with both of the virgins having sex. However, the promise of sex was not set in stone, Migliorini claims.

“Justin made me believe this was a serious documentary about young virgins and said that there might or might not be an auction at the end of the documentary,” she said.
But after Sisely and Migliorini met in Bali, the auction had already been publicly announced, forcing Migliorini into a corner.
“I agreed to go along with it, because Justin said it would be the best way to draw attention from the media about the project,” she said.
In exchange for her participation, Migliorini said she was supposed to receive 20 percent of documentary sales and all of the money from the winning auction bid of $780,000. Neither has materialized, she claims.
Migliorini now believes that "Natsu" doesn't exist. She never had sex with him, and proudly describes herself as a virgin.

Leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, its affiliate, National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, and other activists, on Wednesday, shut down the operations  of Diamond Bank Plc’s Head Office, and two other key branches in Lagos, over sack of 200 union members and officials.

The Adeola Hopewell Head Office and two other branches considered vital to the bank’s effective transactions were shut, preventing customers and others from gaining access into the bank.

The aggrieved labour leaders and activists, displayed several placards with inscriptions such as ‘Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Diamond Bank has closed door against workers, do not keep silent,’ ‘core staff or not we are all workers of Diamond Bank Plc,’ ‘Equals should be treated equally,’ among others.

The picketing, according to leaders of NLC and NUBIFIE, was prompted by the alleged refusal of the management of the bank to, among others, reinstate the sacked workers, even when the National Industrial Court, NIC and Ministry of Labour and Productivity, advised it to do so.

They were said to have arrived the bank’s head office few minutes past 8a.m., barricaded it and ensured that its operations were crippled.

But in an unsigned statement by the bank, it said, “Third party support personnel posted to Diamond Bank have recently had challenges with their Employer –C & M Exchange. As these issues are yet to be resolved, the third party personnel would like Diamond Bank to intercede to resolve the differences.

“Diamond Bank remains concerned about the working conditions and welfare of its entire staff, both contractual and full time.

“As such, we are currently discussing intensely with C & M Exchange to ensure they resolve the issues with their employees in a swift and amicable manner.
